Devin Patrick Hughes: Modernizing Symphony of the Rockies

At Symphony of the Rockies, we are fortunate to have a visionary leader at the helm—Devin Patrick Hughes. As the Artistic Director and Conductor, Hughes brings an infectious passion for symphonic music that is as unmistakable as his signature red shoes. His approach to conducting transcends traditional expectations, modernizing the orchestra and making symphonic music more accessible to contemporary audiences.

A New Era for Symphony: Modernizing the Orchestra

Imagine the powerful opening of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, with strings building a sense of urgency, or the bright and optimistic beginning of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G Minor. Hughes conducts with a unique style—his grip on the baton gentle yet deliberate, evoking anticipation as his movements draw the music forward. As his arms rise toward the heavens, the symphony erupts into life, bringing every instrument to a bold, triumphant crescendo.

Despite his understated demeanor, Hughes is a conductor for the 21st century. He is committed to redefining what an orchestra can be: a cultural hub that bridges classical music with diverse, modern American experiences. Symphony of the Rockies, under his leadership, embodies this vision by embracing innovation and fostering greater community involvement.

Cultural Fusion in Symphonic Music

Hughes, who grew up in Springfield, Illinois, with a heritage that blends Irish and Guatemalan roots, understands firsthand the importance of diversity in music. He views American orchestral music as a true melting pot—a blend of European classical traditions, African American influences, and Native American musical styles. This understanding shapes his approach to conducting, as he recognizes that every piece of music reflects its cultural history, often created in response to societal events of the time.

"Symphonic music has always been influenced by the culture of the time," Hughes explains. "Our European predecessors brought symphonic music to the new world, but today, American symphonic music blends influences from African American and Native American musical traditions."

His lifelong mission to "democratize symphonic music" means making orchestral performances accessible and appealing to all, breaking down barriers for new audiences who may have once felt excluded from this traditional art form.

Innovative Programming and Engaging Audiences

Hughes is no stranger to pushing the boundaries of orchestral programming. He has introduced multimedia elements, popular music, and engaging concert formats—such as yoga-infused performances and candlelight sessions—to make symphonic music more relevant to modern audiences. Additionally, he hosts the One Symphony podcast, where he explores classical music’s relevance in today's world. His guests range from musicians to music entrepreneurs, with episodes that are approachable for both seasoned listeners and newcomers to classical music.

Whether he’s showcasing a contemporary American composer like Brittany Green or curating unique concert pairings such as Epic Love: From Shakespeare to Superheroes, which fuses Verdi’s La Traviata with songs from Oklahoma, Hughes' programming is designed to challenge traditional notions of what a symphony concert can be.

Building Community Connections

Throughout his career, Hughes has worked tirelessly to break down the perceived barriers between the orchestra and the audience. His innovative Discovery and Curiosity concerts engage young audiences through interactive experiences, offering children a chance to connect with music on a personal level. "Breaking down barriers through children’s programs and school engagements is essential," says Hughes. "We aim to foster a love for classical music that will last a lifetime."

As a leader, Hughes also emphasizes the importance of giving back to the community. Symphony of the Rockies under his direction showcases local and international artists, premieres new works, and ensures that people from all walks of life feel welcomed and included in the orchestra’s cultural offerings.

A Legacy of Leadership and Passion

Devin Patrick Hughes' career has taken him from Springfield to some of the most prestigious music programs in the world, including the University of Denver Lamont School of Music, the Vienna Conservatory, and Ithaca College. As the Artistic Director and Conductor of Symphony of the Rockies (formerly Arapahoe Philharmonic), Hughes continues to lead the orchestra with the same passion and drive that has always been the cornerstone of his work. He has held leadership positions with the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association, Denver Young Artists Orchestra, and Denver Philharmonic Orchestra.

In addition to his dedication to music, Hughes is also a strong advocate for effective marketing, creative programming, and community outreach. His work ensures that Symphony of the Rockies remains at the forefront of modern symphonic music, offering performances that appeal to both classical aficionados and newcomers alike.
